The hardest part of nailing down a face up is using the right proportions. One time you get that function, drawing faces will exist piece of cake peasy!

For me, the hardest function was always drawing the eyes in the right size and right place. We look at drawings or photos and information technology looks and so like shooting fish in a barrel, just then, when information technology's our turn, everything is 10x harder.

Like in everything, information technology all comes down to practice. Starting time with shapes, learn the proportions.

Do this a few times and, you'll see that, soon, cartoon just the head volition be as easy as tying your own shoes!

Learn how to Draw a Face by working with the right proportions! Here's a step by step guide.

Of course, I'm going to assist you out and give y'all a step-by-step process on how to describe a face. From Basic Shapes and each feature of the confront, like the eyes, nose, mouth, etc. Calculation details, young and old faces and even cartoon the face in unlike views!

Buckle up and get your sketchbook ready. Nosotros're doing this!

What You Need To Know About Drawing Faces

It's all nearly the shapes. Everything in a cartoon is nearly shapes.

Y'all look at a face as its whole. But I'll expect at it and I'll try to figure out into what shapes can I put information technology down, so I can hands draw it.

Circles, squares, rectangles and guidelines, a puzzle for me to figure out.

Like I said, nosotros're going through a step past step guide for each feature of the face.

I'm going to show you the process I use when learning to draw new things and hopefully, it will be most useful to you!

You lot can do this with any medium you lot'd prefer.

Either with a sketchbook along with some pencils or even pens or catch your drawing tablet and pc. Anything will piece of work, you simply need to come up along with your motivation and showtime.

Basic Confront Proportions

Generally speaking, we're dividing the face into 3 equal parts.

After cartoon our main shapes of the caput, we need to be sure that everything will be in the right places.

For this, there are 3 main spaces you lot might want to add:

  • one goes from the hairline to our brow
  • another from the brow to the nose
  • and finally, nose to mentum

This might audio confusing, but here'due south an example:

Here are the basic proportions that you need to know when drawing a face!

At present, all we are missing is where our eyes, ears, and mouth will be.

But we'll get there in a 2nd, so follow me and we'll build up our caput and face, one step at a time!

Either style, before we begin:

Practice your mitt stretches, organize your workspace, bring some water and snacks if you wish to. The class will brainstorm soon!

Draw The Basic Shapes

Alright, let's get-go very simple.

On your page, draw a circle. If you observe information technology hard to describe a perfect circle, hither'southward a tip: depict a horizontal and vertical line, perpendicular to each other, crossing at the center.

If y'all prefer, use a ruler. Just I'd say to practice this without it. Your lines don't need to be 100% perfect and equally you practice, you'll see that they'll become better with time.

Now that you have your lines, depict the circle around them.

Alternatively, y'all can simply practice a few circles on your folio until you become the hang of information technology. Start with smaller circles and increase their size every bit yous go.

Start by drawing a circle when drawing a face.

Now the next step is to draw a square inside our circumvolve.

This might sound weird, but this square volition make up one's mind the width of our confront.

We're doing a pretty default face at the moment, but afterwards on, we'll talk most how you can use your shapes, to draw different faces!

Alright, half of our head is done, now we demand to find our chin.

Draw a vertical line, following the one yous did for the circle, going down, with the same distance as the upper one-half of the face.

Where the line ends, that'due south where our chin will be!

Draw a square inside the face to know where the jaw is.

Now, all we demand is to connect the points and we take our head done. Next all nosotros need to add is our guidelines for all the features.

Pretty elementary right?

Now y'all just demand to practice this shapes and, gradually, y'all'll outset losing some guidelines, considering you don't demand them anymore. Intuitively you lot'll already know where everything is!

Draw The Eyes and Eyebrows

It's time to start adding features to our face up.

Permit'south beginning from peak to bottom.

Our quest now is to find where our eyes and eyebrows volition exist. Let'due south accept a look at what we accept and so far.

Now, for the eyebrows, our line is already there. Our brow line is where we'll draw the eyebrows.

For the optics, there isn't much for u.s. to practise here either.

Get a bit below the eyebrows and make a new line, this is where the eyes will be.

Set a line for the Eyebrows and the Eyes right below.

The Eyes

To help you on their location, we tin can add some guidelines here as well.

Call up that square nosotros drew at the beginning? Let'southward divide each one-half of the square in two.

Ii vertical lines, going downwards. These lines determine the centre of each heart.

Now, all we need to practise is to add our eye shapes in their places.

Either an oval and almond shape will work. See what works best for you.

Here's how you find the position of the eyes when drawing a face

Our side by side step is to fill up upwards our eyes.

Add the student and iris, the upper eyelid and some eyelashes if you wish!

Draw the eyes on the face, simple shapes!

You can practice these as stylized as you want or go on it very uncomplicated.

More cartoonish or more realistic. Endeavor out different things and experiment!

While you're learning and improving your faces, y'all're also developing your ain mode and discovering what and how you similar to draw!

The Eyebrows

The eyebrows can be very simple or total of particular.

It all comes down to your gustatory modality and style. I tend to depict my eyebrows with a single line. Simply, if you adopt, yous can draw them, pilus by pilus.

And then, of class, y'all tin become with several styles, from very tiny to very thick and bushy eyebrows.

You can draw the eyebrows very simply or with lots of details, totally up to you.

As their identify, we draw them correct above the optics, the line resting in that location is our guideline.

They can go a fleck further than the eyes, but the starting point is the same.

Unremarkably, I start from within the face, I feel that it's easier to become from there.

We draw an biconvex line, turn it around and we close our shape where we began. Remember that the eyebrows are thicker on the within and go thinner on the ends of it.

Here's the position of the eyebrow in the face, just above the eye.

Lovely, the face is starting to look corking!

Draw The Nose

Next in the list is the nose.

We already know where information technology ends, our second guideline, after the brow. Merely where does it begin?

Don't worry, nosotros don't need to add together more lines… yet! Our nose starts at the same line as our eyebrows.

As for its width, information technology will go every bit far as the starting indicate of our eyes. Let'southward do some base shapes first:

Drawing the nose is easy! Here's how you can do it.

Now we just demand to sketch out our nose.

There's a diverseness of styles you can go virtually here. I cover, in a video, the master ones you can exercise, then if you're interested, bank check out my Figure Drawing course on Gumroad!

Equally for the size of the nose, these are only guidelines, feel free to exaggerate your noses or eyes as you wish. Especially if you're doing a more cartoonish manner!

Sketch the nose in your face drawing.

Draw The Mouth

We're most done!

For the mouth, we don't take any guideline yet, so permit'south kickoff with that.

Find the heart indicate between the olfactory organ line and the mentum. Now draw a horizontal line.

We plant our oral fissure!

Draw a line halfway from the nose and the chin to find the mouth!

Now above this line, nosotros'll take our upper lip and beneath, the lesser lip.

Once more, there are several types of lips, thinner or thicker, long lips or very small. Only the default shapes are an M shape for the upper lip and an arch for the bottom.

Like this:

The upper lip of the mouth has an M shape, like this.

Again, try out different styles and shapes.

Experimenting is always the best function of drawing, so have fun with it!

Depict The Ears

We've reached the last step of drawing the face.

All we are missing now is the ears!

I acknowledge, cartoon ears in a front view isn't the almost entertaining, but it is too very simple.

As for their location, very easy every bit well: draw an oval shape, starting in our eyes line, its highest point rests on the brow line and lowest bespeak on the nose line.

The ears are easy to locate when drawing the face, here's how.

And in that location it is, 90% of our ear is down. Now we just demand to add together some details, by and large curves here and at that place:

Feel free to try out different styles and ways to draw the features.

Well done! That's a good looking face.

Adding Details And Aging

Now that you know how to draw a complete face, we tin can add together some details!

Depending on whether you're drawing a younger character or older, the face will wait unlike.

An aging confront will have some wrinkles for case!

Apart from that, there are other details you tin add to give more personality to your character: moles, nascence signs, freckles, scars, amidst others.

If you're drawing male characters, there'due south another addition for you: beards!

There are dozens of styles to get for: long, short, different designs, mustache merely, beards simply or a mix of both!

Details Can Make or Suspension Your Graphic symbol

Don't overdo information technology though!

Details are nice, but y'all can't easily use everything in one character. It tin can be too messy and confusing. As well, the bespeak of adding some details is so that people volition recognize your graphic symbol through unique details.

If you lot're unsure on how to go about your characters, try out dissimilar versions. Try out several things and come across what yous remember works best with their personality.

Once you've called how your grapheme will look, draw them in different poses, locations, deportment and examination them, and so yous're certain that's the wait you lot want!

Cartoon Erstwhile Faces

As I said before, if you want to describe someone older, yous might want to add some wrinkles and even different colored spots and signs over the face.

Equally we age, our skin changes. Use photo references if needed!

The most mutual wrinkles will show on the eyes and around the mouth.

When drawing old faces, remember to add wrinkles and to use photo references to help you!

Merely, once once more, feel free to exaggerate your lines! Even in real life, people age differently and volition look dissimilar!

Cartoon Young Faces

For young people, well there are several stages and there's a lot to play with!

Allow's say you want to draw a infant or a kid. Usually, we become for actually round shapes, the youngest, the chubbiest!

Play with those shapes as much as you want.

Again, expect up some reference images and draw from them.

As for moles or freckles, those tend to appear a bit afterward.

The aforementioned goes for wrinkles, except, if you're going for a very chubby infant, then you tin add together some lines on the forehead and very round cheeks.

For young faces like Babies, draw rounder faces with bigger eyes!

Children are a mix of babies and teens.

In that location'due south less roundness to their faces, but it's withal in that location.

When cartoon both babies and children, we likewise tend to draw very large eyes, most too big. It makes them look cuter and children'south eyes wait e'er a bit bigger than when we're older and very vibrant.

Expect for this kind of details on photographs from when you lot were a kid, for example. Take advantage of these piffling features and exaggerate them in your drawings!

Every bit for scars, well it's something yous can start calculation when drawing both children and teens.

If your grapheme is the adventurer and energetic type, then mayhap a scar or other would fit. I for sure know some people where their scar's stories begin with "When I was a kid…" and stop with "And that'south how I got this one!"

Teens tin can exist really fun also.

This is when the terrible acne starts to appear! You tin add some pimples if you remember it fits your character.

On another annotation: beards! At a sure age, boys beginning growing facial hair, so you lot can start playing with this idea also by giving them small stubbles or random tiny hairs.

Experimenting With Shapes

Alright, so like I said before, we drew our face in a very default style.

Those are the proportions y'all desire to go when drawing a realistic portrait. Simply if y'all're interested and going for a more than cartoonish approach, yous can go beyond these proportions!

Exaggerate the sizes of each characteristic and effort out unlike face shapes. Basically, the only thing that ordinarily doesn't change is the position of each feature. Unless you lot're going for a Picasso arroyo of class!

Try different shapes, a triangle for instance!

Instead of a circumvolve and square, endeavor to employ a triangle. Either upwards or upside down. See the results that you go! A triangle will probably give you a more caricature mode and a more elongated face.

If you really want to play with a very long confront, try a rectangle or a very long triangle!

What virtually a pentagon? Either upright or inverted.

This i can give u.s. very interesting confront shapes.

Take the time to pracitce different head shapes. Each shape can lead to very interesting new characters!

You already have your bases and at present how to practice a face up.

Now it'due south fourth dimension to experiment and endeavour out different formats.

Is your character a very sturdy homo, perhaps a boxer? And so draw a very square confront.

Are you lot drawing someone with a very big belly? Then draw a very round face to match!

There are thousands of options and y'all are gratis to effort whatever you like!

If you don't like the issue, try over again or go with some other shape. You larn with these experiences and not only you're learning different approaches when drawing, you're also improving your drawing skills.

Then, go on practicing and take fun with your characters!

Drawing Faces At Different Angles

We've done our face up in a front end view, but you might desire to draw your characters in other positions. Particularly if y'all want to make a turn around canvass of your grapheme!

Worry not, for I will not get out yous hanging!

Let's get through a few more than tutorials on how to draw faces in different angles.

Side View

Our outset shape here will be the same as before. We get-go with a circumvolve!

Once more, if you lot wish, draw two lines, crossing each other in the middle and so connect everything together. Actually, I'd say to depict your circle similar this, because you lot'll need them later on.

They are very important guidelines!

To draw the face from the side, we start with a circle as well.

Alright, then we have half of our head done. At present, from the bottom of our vertical line, we depict an oblique line, similar and then:

Drawing a face to the side means the jaw will be a slanted or oblique line.

This is our chin and jawline!

Finally, nosotros only need to close this shape. From the edge of our circle, on the right side, describe a vertical line until it touches the line we merely did.

Connect the jaw line with the circle to draw the front of the face.

Our primary shapes are done.

Now it'due south time to start finding where each feature of the face is!

This time, we're starting from the lesser. Just earlier that, remember how we divided the head into three equal parts earlier? Permit'southward do the aforementioned here!

Here are the general dimensions of the face when seen from the side

At present that's washed, from the point where our jawline starts, let'southward depict a horizontal line.

This is where our mouth will exist! At the edge of our caput.

Like last time, the upper lip should be above this line and the lesser lip, below.

Usually, the upper lip besides goes a bit frontwards than the bottom lip. Just over again, it all depends on how you want your character to be!

Start sketching the jaw and mouth, pretty simply!

Adjacent, is the olfactory organ.

We already take our line here, where the end of the nose volition sit. To assist you, before detailing and drawing a finished nose, depict a triangle, going out of the head.

This is where your nose should go.

The nose looks like a triangle when being drawn from the side.

Before drawing the eyes, let's do the ears first.

Since we're seeing the head from just 1 side, we tin only see one ear. Like earlier, the lowest part of the ear will seat on the guideline we did for the nose and the highest part touches the brow line.

This time we tin can besides see more details of the ear.

I usually go for a very simple ear, but feel costless to add together all the curves that you meet on your ear!

When drawing the ears from the side, remember to add some details!

As for the optics, we tin also see only one of them and its shape volition too be very different than earlier. Its placement is the same as before, the central horizontal line on our circumvolve!

For its shape, instead of a circle or almond shape, we draw a cone.

Now we only need to add details like the pupil, iris, eyelashes and a flake of the upper eyelid.

The eyes have a cone shade when drawing a face from the side.

We're almost done and this concluding function is rather simple!

We just need to add our eyebrow.

We already have a identify for information technology and now nosotros just need to depict an arched line, a scrap more than tilted in the front and we're washed!

The eyebrow can once again be as simple or as complex as you want.

3/4 View

This 1 is usually the one that well-nigh people have difficulty with. This is why I did a whole section with x videos on my effigy drawing grade, only for drawing a complete caput in a 3/4 view!

A part of the confront is hidden, but not completely, so getting the proportions correct tin can be hard.

Permit'due south start with our circle!

So far, nosotros've ever been drawing straight lines, this time we need a curved ane. From the tiptop of the circle, going all the manner down.

Drawing a Face or Head in a three quarters view can be somewhat complicated, so let me guide you step by step!

Now, to make things a bit easier, let'due south describe a rectangle, starting from the hairline, downwardly to the nose.

This style we accept almost a complete shape of our head, plus two of our master guidelines!

Draw a rectangle on the head to make it easier to find the features of the face.

At present, we need to add our mentum line, and then from the nose line, get downwardly the aforementioned altitude as you take from the brow to the olfactory organ.

Finally, we just need to connect the dots!

Add the chin line to your three quarters view of the face.

Fourth dimension to fill everything up!

Starting with the eyebrows, everything has a fleck of a 3D feel correct at present, and then it's like we accept arched guidelines. One of the eyebrows is completely seen, while the other is cut.

The shapes are the aforementioned equally before though!

start working the main lines of the head and face.

Let's draw the ear now, so we tin can detect the line for our eyes.

This time, we can but run into i ear besides. Draw an oval shape, where its higher point touches the brow line and the lowest, the olfactory organ line. Just similar we good before!

At present just add together the details.

The ear here is done very similarly to when nosotros drew it on a side view.

The eyebrows and ears can be simply drawn like this.

Next is the eyes, probably the 1 people have the most bug with.

Its line goes right below the brow line, same altitude, and place as nosotros did earlier.

Like in a forepart view, we draw almond shapes for the eyes.

The eye that is farthest from us is normally a bit hidden from the nose, so take that into consideration!

The eyes look a bit more slanted in a three quarters view.

At present it's time to draw the nose.

We can simply see one of the nostrils, then the shape hither will exist a triangle, similar to the one we drew in a side view.

Like I mentioned before, the olfactory organ is in front of one of the eyes, so be sure to draw that line on peak, connecting to the countenance.

The nose is very easy to draw in a three quarters view, a simple slanted triangle.

Finally, we draw the oral cavity, similar to the i in the front view.

An "Thou" shape for the upper lip and an arch for the bottom lip.

The only difference here is that one of the sides of your lips will appear smaller since a role of the face is turned abroad from us.

The mouth can be tricky to draw, if you're having trouble, look up photo references!

Looking Up

Every shape is mostly the same when looking up, the only difference hither is that we draw more arched guidelines, especially for the optics.

I'm going to leave here an example, and then information technology's easier to understand!

Drawing someone looking up can be pretty fun!

Looking Downward

Aforementioned as before, except that this time, our lines curvation in the reverse direction.

Again, permit's come across what I mean past this with an instance:

When people are looking down, the face features follow the lines!

Dissimilar Expressions, Unlike Face Shapes

Depending on what kind of expression you're going for, the face will accept different shapes.

For example, if you're cartoon a surprised character, eyes growing big and a long "O" for the mouth, then the face will look more elongated.

On the other mitt, if you're drawing someone aroused, where the optics and eyebrows abound close together and a closed mouth, perhaps showing some teeth. Then we have the opposite effect.

Depending on the expressions your character is making, the face will move accordingly!

Put yourself in front of a mirror and do your expressions.

Take photos if you need to! So, you'll have tons of references for you lot to use in your drawings. If y'all prefer, yous tin even trace on elevation of your photos, and then you tin can see conspicuously the differences in proportions and shapes, depending on the expression yous're making!

Summing Information technology Up

Uff, that was a lot of learning!

But, equally you tin encounter, the of import parts y'all need to retain when drawing faces are proportions and shapes.

In one case yous smash those downwards, everything else comes easily.

As ever, exercise a lot. In the showtime, do merely the shapes and guidelines if needed. After a few tries, you'll see that everything will come up more intuitively.

If you adopt to see these steps in video format, check my course on Effigy Drawing over on Gumroad. Together, we can go over drawing a face, different types of ears, mouths, noses, etc, in unlike views!
